A woman was banned from flying after she refused to go through a new “naked” body scanner on religious grounds.

Her companion was also barred from the Pakistan-bound jet after she declined the security scan “for medical reasons”.

The two Muslims, selected by staff to go through the machine at Manchester Airport, are thought to be the first passengers to refuse a scan since the system began last month.

The pair decided to forfeit their £400 tickets rather than have the scans which have been criticised for showing clear outlines of passengers’ genitals.

An airport spokesman said: “Two female passengers refused to be scanned for medical and religious reasons. In accordance with the government directive they were not permitted to fly. We are aware that privacy concerns are on our customers’ minds, which is why we have strict procedures to reassure them that their privacy will be protected.” The spokesman added that neither woman made a complaint.
